The purpose of the second session is to align the feet, and by association the knees, under the body in order to create a stable foundation on which to stand. With the belief that the body is a home for the soul, after establishing the master plan, of breath in session 1, we must establish a solid foundation on which to build. A carpenter knows that without a solid foundation, a house will not stand for long. Further than that, an uneven foundation will actually cause greater deviances once we reach the ceiling. This is also true of the human body. Starting with the feet, we must have a stable platform or else by the time we reach the top of our structure we will have created a wave of small adjustments that only grow larger and more pronounced as we ascend. In this session, as we begin to "understand" our bodies and problems, we may experience thoughts and emotions around our standing in the world. We may have feelings around our security and stability. We may begin to see the connection in sayings such as "stand on your own two feet" or "in good standing", and how they are used to describe "upstanding citizens", to name a few. |

In order to accomplish the physical goals of this session, we work with the soles of the feet to strengthen and equalize the 3 archings to create a stable platform. When the feet are working properly, we will find ourselves balanced evenly on a tripod, one point being the heel, one being the fleshy pad behind the big toe, and the last being the fleshy pad behind the little toe. When we are balanced evenly, we will also find an arching between any two of these balance points. I use the term arching, a verb, instead of the commonly used arches to emphasize that this is an active principle within the body. The muscles of the lower leg act on the bony structures of the feet in order to create these archings. |

Therefore, in order to balance the feet, we must work the lower legs, as the muscles found there greatly influence the feet, and our stance. In doing so, we also must pay attention to the ankle, and it's functioning, and to the knees. Both of these joints, in an organized body, will align on the sagittal plane, which is best envisioned as a vertical plane running down our spine, splitting us into even left and right sides, assuming symmetry which would imply balance. Both the knees and ankles, in a sound organized body, will move directly forward and back. All too often this is not the case, and the knees are either bowed or knocked, to greater or lesser degrees. Very often also we find the feet turned outward somewhat, giving the appearance of more stability, but not the function of more stability, as will become more clear in session 4. As we move forward towards a sound body, we build on our new solid foundation, which is now capable of supporting our structure. |
