Session 3: Reaching Out

In session 3 we move up the body, working primarily the entire side line, from the knee up the side of the abdomen and ribs, and into the shoulder. The shoulders and arms are only about 10 percent of a humans bodymass, but are an important factor in differentiating us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Very few animals are bipedal, or stand on two legs. Most that are capable of a two-legged stance are only partially bipedal, as in the case of many primates (monkeys, apes and chimpanzees). They are capable of standing on their hind limbs, but don't have a fully verticle spine, and therefore go between a 2 and 4 limbed stance as needed. Only humans have a fully vertical spine. For most animals the front limbs are front legs. The formation of arms, hands, and especially opposable thumbs have allowed us the use of tools, a gift humans would have undoubtedly not survived without.

Therefore the arms represent in large part how we interact with the world, how we reach out, both for what we want to receive and to give. The arms also represent how we reach out to the world proactively, how we get things done.

As we move into this section, we may begin to uncover our feelings around our interactions with the world. Are you a giver or a taker? Have you been able to ask for what you want? Have you been able to accept anothers helping hand? Have you been able to reach your full potential? Another possible arising could be around unresolved aggression or anger. A call to arms, if you will.

Physically we will bring length and verticality to the sides of the body. This will allow us greater movement in the shoulders, and freedom to interact with the world. It will also continue to strengthen and free the process of breath, as we open the side of the ribs and move tissue towards the midline, to give strength and support to our center.
