The Sleeve Sessions

In order to understand Structural Integration, it is important to understand the pairing of intrinsic and extrinsic. The body, in order to be balanced, must be realized as an outer structure balancing an inner, an extrinsic balancing and intrinsic, and vice-versa, as is implied by a balance. Both sides must be of equal strength, tonicity, and resilience, which will then become equal reliance and use.

In Structural Integration, we work the extrinsic first, for several reasons. First of all, it is what is presented as most easily available. It is also what most people are familiar with. When asked to move the body, most people would immediately use their extrinsic muscles to do the action. We are more aware of the extrinsic, and often forget the importance of the intrinsic, or core muscles. Secondly, we can get to the extrinsic easier. By working the outside first, the body learns to recieve bodywork, and will allow us to move deeper with time, patience and sensitivity.

This is why we refer to the first 3 sessions as "The Sleeve Sessions". We work the outer sleeve of the body before proceeding deeper, asking the body nicely to allow us deeper, and freeing one side of the balance before moving to the other.
